Walk For Water

Published

To acknowledge World Water Day and raise awareness of the current global water crisis, Project Concern International (PCI) is leading the second annual San Diego Walk for Water along with its partner and presenting sponsor, Nika Water. The 5k-walk will be held at Tecolote Shores in Mission Bay on Sunday, March 21, from 10am-1pm. During the event, walkers can choose to carry buckets of water to simulate the journey that women and children make every day in developing countries around the world to obtain water. Registration is open to the public and is $10 per person and $25 for a family of four. Donations and registration fees from the event will go toward funding a water system for remote villages in Tanzania.

To increase local awareness of this event and bring attention to the billions of people who lack access to clean water around the world, PCI has joined forces with students from many schools and colleges including La Jolla Country Day School, The Bishops School, and Francis Parker School. These institutions will hold assemblies prior to the walk and plan to participate in the event.

Project Concern is aware of the girls and women around the world who spend at least six hours a day obtaining water and carrying 44-pound containers over extreme distances. The lack of access to clean drinking water leads to disease and sickness. PCI gives students and families the opportunity to step into these shoes and experience their daily journey.

“This event hopes to promote awareness and compassion towards the water conservation issues that affect the rest of the world. We hope to create that awareness starting at a local level,” states Shawn Ruggeiro, director of institutional advancement at PCI. “With the most recent devastation that occurred in Haiti, millions face the problem of finding potable water on a daily basis. We, as a community, can gain tips and ideas on how to conserve water locally and help ease the burden of this global issue.”
