Marianne Kushi Guest Favorites 2012

Published

We asked several San Diego notables to share their favorite things about the beloved town we call home, and their interpretations turned out to be quite varied and personal. Here are some of the things that make our celebrity guests tick.

Marianne Kushi, Anchor, NBC San Diego

Favorite U.S. Destination: New York City. I’ve had family there since I was a child. It’s always vibrant, changing, and full of little neighborhoods to explore.

Favorite Foreign Destination: Tokyo. I’m in love with cities of all sizes. And since I’m Japanese American, I feel rooted there.

Bucket List Travel Destination: I’ve visited 110 cities and 25 countries. I’ve wanted to go to Easter Island ever since I saw a segment of “Where In The World Is Matt Lauer.”

Best New Restaurant: Snooze, Hillcrest. Breakfast Pot Pie.

Favorite Restaurant: Barbarella, La Jolla Shores. Love that place. Barbara makes everyone feel welcome even if it’s your first visit.

Best Casual Dining: Saffron Restaurant, India Street. Khao Soy is the Wednesday special and is absolutely addicting. Su-Mei is the most creative chef.

Best Stationery: U.S. Post Office, Horton Plaza. Believe it or not, they have the best cards.

Best Bookstore: Warwick’s in La Jolla. While other huge bookstores are failing, they continue to re-invent themselves.

Best Local Musical Artist: Sheila Sondergard. I heard her for the first time on our morning show and she is featured on SoundDiego.com. What a great voice.

Best Local Athlete: Olympian Monique Henderson. Stunning, intelligent, motivating, in addition to her Olympic gold medals.

Local Well-Known You’d Like To Lunch With: Bill Gates. Forbes.com says he owns a vacation home in Rancho Santa Fe. Does that qualify?

Best Sashimi: I go to Point Loma Seafood and order yellowtail, tuna, and salmon from the fish case and take it home and slice it myself. Yum.

Best Quick Bite: Girard Gourmet. Francois and Diana create the most fun display of cookies with a secret lemon icing, not to mention the soup, stews, salads, and pastries.

Best Executive Chef: Bernard Guillas, Marine Room. Extreme attention to detail that translates into a meal that melts in your mouth.
