His Girl Friday has been referred to as a screwball comedy. And it’s so much fun. Head to La Jolla Playhouse to see this smartly paced show in freshened state due to an adaptation of Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur’s popular play The Front Page and Howard Hawks’ film His Girl Friday. The high energy Hawks film, which starred Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell, was captivating. The new adaptation is by the celebrated playwright John Guare, author of Six Degrees of Separation and The House of Blue Leaves, as well as the Tony Award-winning musical Two Gentlemen of Verona. Expect a high-energy comedic romp with snap and sparkle. At the helm is Christopher Ashley, artistic director of LJP, who directed Xanadu and Memphis, which earned four Tony Awards. In June and July, David Cromer directs Nina Raine’s Tribes at LJP. This provocative piece won the 2012 Drama Desk Award for outstanding new play, with The New York Times describing it as “smart, lively,” and Entertainment Weekly calling it “superb.” Tribes offers a contemporary take on family dynamics. It has been characterized as both savage and funny. (858.550.1010, www.lajollaplayhouse.org)    DARLENE G. DAVIES
