31st Annual Silver Tea
On Tuesday, December 9, St. Germaine Children’s Charity hosted the 31st Annual Silver Tea from at a private estate in La Jolla. Members of St. Germaine’s Silver Tea committee welcomed 430 volunteers and guests to tour the traditional California-style home decorated in holiday trim while enjoyed tea sandwiches, cookies, and refreshments and bidding on more than 70 auction items. Ticket sales, donations, and the auction raised almost $120,000 to support local child abuse prevention programs selected as St. Germaine’s 2015 grant recipients.
“We are really pleased with the turn out,” says Wendy Neri, president of St. Germaine Children’s Charity. “More guests attended and we raised more than we have in the past two years. I think our success this year is mainly due our lovely featured home and the dedication of our Silver Tea committee.”
In its second year as part of the silent auction, the Trees for Tots program showcased miniature holiday trees, approximately three-feet tall, uniquely decorated by local merchants including Adelaide’s, Canterbury Gardens, Cos Bar, Girard Avenue Collection, Green Gardens Nursery, Hydrangea Cove, Kravet-Fabric and Furnishings, Nativa Interiors, PINDLER/Maureen Beinbrink, Anseth Richards/Creative Occasions, Ross Thiele & Son, and Sur la Table. Each tree featured decorations and ornaments that reflect the merchants’ style.
Additional financial support for the event came from underwriters including Donald Daley Jr. and Tauny Daley, Diane Hollingsworth and The Lyman Family Foundation.
“Stephanie and I are so appreciative of the tremendous community and member support,” said Nicole Brown, co-chair of the 2014 Silver Tea. “While we host educational events throughout the year, the Silver Tea is our organization’s largest and main fundraising event. Its success determines the money we are able to give programs that help stop child abuse and neglect.”
Beginning in March 2015, dozens of local child abuse prevention programs will be evaluated by St. Germaine’s Philanthropy Committee to determine the 2015 Grant Recipients. In June, the organization will host its Annual Awards Luncheon and announce the 2015 Grant Recipients. The selected programs and organizations will receive the monies raised from the Silver Tea.
St. Germaine Children’s Charity 2014 grant recipients were: Angels Foster Family Network, Armed Services YMCA San Diego, Aseltine School, Association for Human-Animal Bond Studies, Casa de Amparo, Hannah’s House, New Haven Youth & Family Services, San Diego Police Foundation, SAY San Diego Healthy Start Military Family Resource Center, St. Vincent de Paul, STAR/PAL, The Children’s Initiative and Walden Family Services.
St. Germaine Children’s Charity is a California nonprofit corporation comprised of approximately 170 members who contribute countless hours of individual volunteer time. Each event hosted by St. Germaine is staffed entirely by volunteers and the organization’s administrative costs are paid through membership dues.
Founded by Barbara Christensen in 1984, St. Germaine Children’s Charity has provided financial and in-kind support to San Diego County’s abused and neglected children through grants to the local agencies that serve them. In addition to annual monetary awards, St. Germaine’s members and community partners provide clothing, equipment, toys, school supplies, household items and volunteer time. To date, St. Germaine Children’s Charity has contributed more than $4 million to the fight against child abuse.
