7th Annual Shave-A-Thon

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation San Diego Chapter is once again teaming up with The Commons for the organization’s annual, nationwide Shave-A-Thon, celebrating the event’s seventh and most anticipated year yet. San Diegans will converge on the downtown hotspot on Saturday, March 7, to shave their heads in the name of generating awareness, funding research for childhood cancer, and continuing to help survivors live long and healthy lives.

Last year, more than 455,589 people participated in more than 9,221 shave-a-thon events and fundraisers worldwide — the most in St. Baldrick’s history. Moreover, St. Baldrick’s Foundation is the leading contributor to childhood cancer research in the country, second only to the U.S. Government, raising over $38 million in 2014.

“The growing support behind the event’s first six years demonstrates San Diego’s commitment to this very important cause,” says Jake Pescatello, founder of St. Baldrick’s San Diego chapter. “Over the past six years, we’ve raised over $165,000 in total, and this year we hope to raise $50,000. We’ve expanded our efforts with promotional events leading up to the San Diego Shave-A-Thon this year, driving the momentum even further and reaching more individuals within the community.”

Last year’s sixth annual event was an overwhelming success — with over 50 heads shaved, a packed house of supporters garnered a total of over $35,000 raised. Faces were filled with smiles, laughter, hope and tears, creating a unique sense of camaraderie among families, friends, and even strangers who came together in honor of this incredible effort. With the attendance expected to double this year, the support and fulfillment of the event will exceed expectations.

The St. Baldrick’s Shave-A-Thon begins at noon on March 7 at The Commons in downtown San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter. Head shaving will commence at 12:30pm. A $10 donation at the door provides admission to the event and a $20 donation at the door includes admission to the event, T-shirt, and raffle ticket. One-hundred percent of the proceeds from the afternoon will go directly to St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

This year, a handcrafted specialty St. Baldrick’s signature cocktail will be featured, with a portion of the proceeds directly benefiting the foundation. The promotion will take place throughout the entire month of March. The Commons is creating three specialty items from which $1 from the sales of each will benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. The Commons is showcasing delicious Spicy Guinness Wings served with a Stone Smoked Porter Aioli dipping sauce paired with either a Jameson Ginger a blend of Jameson Irish Whiskey, Ginger Ale and a dash of Angostura Bitters, or an Irish Pancake Shot made up of Jameson Irish Whiskey, maple syrup and orange juice.
