Sandcastles in the Sky

The U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge, a Labor Day weekend tradition, returns to B Street Pier downtown September 4-7. The built-for-the-occasion beach will feature over 300 tons of sand, transformed into dazzling works of art by sculptors from around the U.S., Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Latvia, Quebec, and more. Back by popular demand is the Cool California Carvers Class, comprised of nine teams of three professionals, each carving for two days. Kids can learn how to build sandcastles by professional sculptors, and the event will also feature food trucks, live bands, and a beer garden. A portion of proceeds supports four local children’s educational charities. (www.ussandsculpting.com)
