Supporting Our Firefighters

The San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation is kicking off a three-month crowd-funding campaign to purchase Personal Escape Systems, devices that provide firefighters with the ability to exit in less than 30 seconds from an upper floor window should they become trapped or disoriented during interior fire operations. The devices currently used require all firefighters who are escaping to be together, to find an anchor within the burning building, and to tie a series of knots before exiting. This takes roughly four to six minutes. The San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation is aiming to fund a PES — which cost nearly $700 each — for each of the 873 San Diego firefighters.  (www.sdfirerescue.org)
