Del Mar National Grand Prix’s New Champion

Chris Pratt and the new Edal Ranch

The much-anticipated May 7 evening was electric with everyone on the edge of their seats. The cheering crowd and star-studded lineup at the $100,000 Grand Prix of Del Mar welcomed a new champion to our local equestrian community. The course was difficult, producing only four clear rounds, and Concorde, with Chris Pratt in the irons, was brilliant, putting in one of only two double clear rounds to win the class.

Following the HITS Thermal Winter circuit, Pratt, a top Canadian rider, moved his Epic Stables from Lakeview to the fully renovated state-of-the-art Edal Ranch in Rancho Santa Fe. When asked about his new home, Pratt replied enthusiastically, “The new facility is nothing short of amazing! Eddy Sepul has created the finest horse training facility on the West Coast. He and his wife, Alessandra, have built the best in everything from the footing, to the stables, to the lounge” — and the list goes on. And yes, he is accepting new clients there.

When asked about some of his favorite Rancho Santa Fe and Del Mar competitions, he told us, “Del Mar National has the electric atmosphere that we’re always craving when we compete.” And this year was no different, with an engaged and vocal crowd in the stands.

In August, Pratt will represent his native Canada on the Canadian Equestrian Team at major events in Spain. And his Rancho Santa Fe neighbors will be sending up a hearty cheer for one of our own.
