Summer Pops

Jul. & Aug.

Many tempting performances are scheduled for the months of July and August as part of the San Diego Symphony Summer Pops series. Officially named Bayside Summer Nights: Summer Pops 2016, the line-up at the Embarcadero is a potpourri of musical styles, instruments, and historical periods. Start with Star Spangled Pops July 1-3, then get set for the special 4th of July concert, Celebrate America on America’s Birthday. More concerts this month offer a salute to Tito Puente, a tribute to the Beatles, and then, on July 17, the spectacular Diana Ross singing in her inimitable style. Trumpeter Chris Botti takes stage on July 28, and country music star Trace Adkins entertains the next night. The July 30 show has been so popular it is being produced again, but reprogrammed. The performance, Hooray for Hollywood, will feature some of Hollywood’s most famous movie songs and themes, accompanied by edited film clips on the big screen.

Of ten alluring concerts in August, highlights include Seth MacFarlane and the Great American Songbook on August 12-13, and Dreamworks Animation in Concert — Celebrating 20 Years on August 28. And don’t miss the mega-talented Bernadette Peters on August 26-27. The star of so many Broadway shows consistently wows audiences with her voice, stage presence, and interpretations of Stephen Sondheim’s music, but whatever song she tackles, the performance is golden.

The list of programs and performers is impressive. If it’s impossible to choose, subscribe to the entire season. The setting is beautiful, the weather usually agreeable, and the music filled with joy. 619.235.0804, sandiegosymphony.org   DARLENE G. DAVIES
