Our Great Tchaikovsky
Our Great Tchaikovsky
Jan. 12-Feb. 12, 2017
Hershey Felder, actor, singer, pianist, and writer, returns to San Diego Repertory Theatre, assuming the persona of the great Russian composer Tchaikovsky. Our Great Tchaikovsky is the latest in a series of Felder one-man shows that bring to life great composers, this one a world premiere. The story spans the time period from Czarist Russia to Putin’s present-day Russia, and it is packed with cultural and political references. Celebrated for his Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, and Romeo and Juliet music, Tchaikovsky remains enigmatic, as do his many of his melodies. His answer to queries about the meaning of Symphony No. 6, Pathetique? “Let them guess what it means.” The cause of his death also remains a mystery. He was healthy when he conducted the Pathetique premiere in St. Petersburg nine days before his demise. Then, at age 53 the man was gone. The music, however, has survived and thrived. 619.544.1000, sdrep.org
