Signs of Spring

What to wear now that spring is in the air? Style advisor Alex Yanez unveiled the top trends of the season at Neiman Marcus in Fashion Valley, from “Frills That Thrill” to “Head-Turning Earrings.” Here’s what’s in store:
Ruffles now flourish. Exaggerated waves cascade down the sleeves of a jacket or the front of a blouse. The shirt, that menswear staple, has been redefined for her, often worn off the shoulder. Bare a little — or a lot — with tops that have “peekaboo shoulders” or skirts with slits that show a bit of leg. Stripes are on-trend, vertical or horizontal, and often mixed together or paired with florals. Neutrals seem especially new — whites, creams, and khakis — perhaps worn with a dash of olive green.
More is more this season, says Yanez, whether embroidered, beaded, or bejeweled, in both clothing and accessories. We loved a pair of orange suede flats festooned with feathers. Flats, by the way, are the new height of fashion, although lower, stacked mid-heels are also “in,” as well as shoes that wrap and tie around the ankle. Earrings, both oversized and over the top, are turning heads. “Bigger is better,” Yanez says, when it comes to jewelry. By contrast, handbags are much smaller. Mini-bags, just large enough to carry life’s bare necessities, are major fashion news. “Honey, I shrank the handbag,” says Yanez with a grin. neimanmarcus.com Andrea Naversen
