July’s All About Horses In Del Mar
Get ready to place your trifectas and superfectas on July 21, when horse racing season commences at the Del Mar Racetrack. Arguably, opening day at the tracks is the highlight of summer in San Diego and brings out the socialite in all of us. It also brings out some of the most beautiful and humorous hats in the county, as it is the day of the One and Only Truly Fabulous Hats Contest. Jockeys such as Gary Stevens and Julie Krone remind us that toughness has nothing to do with size, and it all contributes to the buzz of big winnings, majestic thoroughbreds, and fun in the sun. — Charles Union

La Jolla Woman’s Club Celebrates 110 Years
Only 110 years old and still very much alive and kicking — that’s the La Jolla Woman’s Club, which meet regularly in the clubhouse gifted to them by the fabled Ellen Browning Scripps. Not only was it designed by Irving Gill, but the building was accepted in the National Register of Historic Places, the first for La Jolla. Over the years, 56 have served, but five surviving past presidents were honored at the luncheon. Scripps would have been proud.

Sentimental Journey
The Rancho Santa Fe Historical Society’s USO-style spectacle at the Garden Club was a “Patriotic Tribute to All Military Veterans.” The performances were a flashback to World War II, with music by Glenn Miller, Cole Porter and the “Andrews Sisters,” produced by Olga Worm and a cast of all ages dancing and singing. During the show, all veterans in the audience were asked to stand and be recognized. The effect was profound – many admitted to being deeply moved by the remembrances and the honor given them, and as the show progressed thorugh the evening, there was nary a dry eye in the house. The Historical Society has been honoring veterans for two years now, in conjunction with the Library of Congress’ Oral History Project.

Helping Neighbors
The annual Neighborhelp Fashion Show went off without a hitch again this year. The sellout crowd filled the Garden Club and had a ball shopping ahead of time at the various boutiques on the patio, which donated 15 percent of their proceeds to the cause. Guest models — who even got their hair done by Salon Salon — included Rhonda Connelly, Linda Sansone, Julie Plashkes, Sara Dumke, and Faith Kettel. They showed off their fashions by walking around the tables between courses of the scrumptious meal provided and underwritten by Pamplemousse Grille, starting with roasted yellow pepper and pear soup, and ending with a choice of either chocolate pecan bread pudding or blackberry crisp with vanilla sauce. — Sparkle Stiff
