Mama’s
Day 2004: Most Successful Event To Date
Mama’s Day 2004 broke all records — the 13th annual
event raised more than $150,000. These funds alone will provide
three meals a day for 71 people affected by HIV/AIDS and their
families in San Diego County for the entire year. Sixty-five of
San Diego’s top restaurants offered up their most tempting
dishes to an enthusiastic record crowd of 900. Pablo Mendez and
his trio played while guests sipped the coolest drinks — Absolut
Vodka created a signature “Aquatini” for the event.
An employee owned company, SAIC was the presenting sponsor; leading
sponsors were: Union Bank of California, Sycuan Resort & Casino,
the Hyatt La Jolla, Neiman Marcus, and the lead media partner was
Smooth Jazz 98.1FM. For more information about Mama’s Kitchen,

San
Elijo Lagoon Conservancy
San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy has acquired 15 acres of land adjacent
to the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve (SELC) and Ford Wildlife
Habitat Preserve. This acquisition involves an innovative real
estate transaction that not only transfers ownership of the land,
but turns the purchase price into a permanent endowment that benefits
SELC. A check in the amount of $367,000 from the California Coastal
Conservancy was formally presented to the Rancho Santa Fe Foundation
during a press conference and festivities for SELC’s annual
Member Appreciation Day. — Doug Wilson |

Studio
54 Resurrected To Benefit Children’s Hospital
The North Coast Unit of the Auxiliary for San Diego Children’s
Hospital outdid themselves once again. Glamourama 2004, held May
14 at La Costa Resort and Spa and themed Studio 54, had everyone
bidding on amazing silent and live auction items as they boogied
the night away. For the first time ever, men were invited to join
the fun and assisted in raising $140,000 to be used to benefit
the tiniest patients in the hospital’s Neo Natal Intensive
Care Unit. Glamourama is an annual, not-to-be-missed event held
each spring. — Laurel Chocholek |

A
Midsummer Night’s
Dream Photography by Jennifer Nelson
At the 36th La Jolla Debutante Ball, now a biannual event, 35 beautiful
and talented debutantes, from Allison Ashley Abell to Elise Morgan
Zable, were presented to society by their fathers. Held at the
Hotel del Coronado, the ball, themed A Midsummer Night’s
Dream, was both a very formal affair and a frolicking fantasy.
Part idyllic dream and part romantic romp, it played loose tribute
to William Shakespeare’s happiest comedy. The Debutante Ball
celebrates a very special group of young women. Each has already
made a contribution to San Diego through academic, artistic, and
athletic accomplishments, and with countless hours of community
service. The evening is an opportunity to celebrate what they’ve
already done and look forward to the roles they’ll play as
they grow into adults. With 550 attendees, the event raised over
$50,000 for a wide range of children’s charities. — Paul
