The 98th Charity Ball
There were many gleaming smiles at the 98th Charity Ball. Kimberly Miller chaired the event, held (as always) at the Hotel del Coronado. She’s a dental hygienist, so it’s surely no coincidence that the ball was titled Sensational Smiles and that it benefited the Pediatric Dental Residency Program at Rady Children’s Hospital. Even the Tooth Fairy herself was there (Dental Hygiene Society "toothologist" Danice Dean). The event included a large reception, dinner in the opulent Crown Room, and entertainment, which included an impressive Irish dance program. — Paul Andrews

Hope Diamond — History Of A Cursed Gem
The Smithsonian Institution’s Richard Kurin, PhD shared fascinating information about the fabled Hope Diamond with a stylish group of Costume Council supporters. Guests questioned about the history of the legendary blue-hued, and supposedly cursed, diamond while sipping blue martinis and nibbling on delectable food. Blue dresses loaned by prominent San Diego women were on display, and many of the women in attendance were attired in blue, also.

Tenth Annual Heart Of San Diego
The Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center celebrated the 10th annual gala at the Hyatt Recency La Jolla at Aventine. The gathering honored Peter Farrell, PhD, a tireless supporter and head of his own ResMed Foundation, which specializes in the relationship between sleep-disordered breathing and heart disease. Plans of the center’s upcoming 128,000-square-foot building gave a glimpse of the future. The night netted the center over $500,000.

Caring For Kids
A fundraiser for Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego and Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation’s PC Pals program was recently hosted by Neil and Marcina Checketts, owners of Casa Blanca Salon & Spa in Del Rayo Village, to celebrate the launch of the spa’s Web site. The festivities featured a fashion show, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, desserts, Champagne station, oxygen bar, and a pink martini salon. A cook-off between executive chefs Bernard Guillas and Jeffrey Strauss led to patrons declaring Strauss the winner.

Rock And Roll For School
Music lovers recently gathered at The Belly Up for a special benefit concert by Joe Walsh of The Eagles and James Gang fame. The beneficiary was the Grauer School in Encinitas and its new building. Guests of this one-of-a-kind event were treated to classic tunes by the rock and roll legend including "Hotel California." Eagles gear, including signed guitars, was auctioned off, and the event raised significant funds for the school.

A Magical, Musical Night
A special musical event was held at the Rancho Santa Fe home of Joyce and Craig Grosvenor, where friends and San Diego Symphony supporters gathered for an evening of cocktails and dinner. Marvin Hamlisch, Principal Pops Conductor of the San Diego Symphony, entertained guests at the piano with his favorite tunes from Broadway and film. Hamlisch surprised the Grosvenors with a song he wrote especially for them as a tribute to their recent marriage, along with an autographed and framed original score of the song.

Vista Hill’s Women’s Council On Mental Health
Vista Hill kicked off its 50th anniversary year with a mental health spring luncheon program featuring special guest Mariel Hemingway, granddaughter of Nobel prize-winning famed novelist, Ernest Hemingway. Mariel, who has survived four suicides within her own family, spoke candidly about the genetic tendencies toward mental illness, and a childhood plagued with pain and heartbreak. Today, her message is clear — there is a way out, there is help, and as a survivor, it is not her fault.
