Fresh Faced
Much like the season’s bold fashions, spring makeup trends are also welcoming the arrival of color. "On the runways we saw bright, vivid lip color," affirms Mona Van Cleve of Solana Beach’s Do’s & Lipstick. "If you don’t want to show off your lips, choose another feature and pop some color there." For a more subtle spring look, Van Cleve adds, "you can simply sweep a soft color over your eyelid, pop a pretty, fresh cream_blush on your cheeks, or use a sheer colored lipgloss. That way you’ll still look current with color but it will keep you in your comfort zone."

Spa Week
Spa Week is coming to San Diego April 14-20. "Bringing the spa experience to the masses was my goal," notes Spa Week founder Cheryl Reid on the company’s Web site. She continues, "The concept was simple; full service treatments normally costing from $100 to $200 dollars for just $50 dollars. No longer would spa be relegated to the wealthy; it was my mission to make it an affordable part of a healthy lifestyle routine." Participating spas locally include Away Spa at the W Hotel, The Cardiff Medical Spa, Spa Violet, Complexions Rx, Bella Pelle Medical Spa, The Spa at the Sporting Club, and more — each of which will offer two to three full-service treatments for only $50. In Orange County participating spas include Complexions Day Spa and Wellness Center, Fresh Espace, and Spa Gregories. And since Spa Week is hopping on the green trend this year, many offerings will feature organic, herbal, and detoxifying treatments. (www.spaweek.org) — Jane Shiomi

On The Nose
Trauma to the nose can not only lead to unsightly bumps and crooked tips, but can also make the simple act of breathing more difficult. Brian J. Reagan, MD, FACS, who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and specializes in all areas of plastic surgery, has a particular interest in nose reshaping. "There are few procedures that have such a dramatic simultaneous effect in creating or restoring beauty, and restoring function," says Reagan, who likes to perform "open" rhinoplasty because he feels he can be more precise. "Rhinoplasty is an exacting procedure where millimeters make all the difference," he says. When using the open technique, the surgeon makes a small incision across the strip of tissue between the nostrils in order to raise the soft tissues of the nose and reshape the structure. Reagan uses this method in primary and revisionary surgeries. "Many of my patients have had previous rhinoplasty elsewhere and are unhappy with their results." A patient of Reagan’s who wishes to remain anonymous had two previous rhinoplasty surgeries with other doctors and was extremely dissatisfied with the outcome of both. His doctors said he could not undergo another operation because too much scar tissue had formed. He met with Reagan, who convinced him that although the surgery would be difficult, Reagan could achieve his desired results. "Dr. Reagan really listened to what I wanted," affirms the patient. "He did it the way I wanted it to be done, the way it should have been done the first time." (858/362-9076, www.drreagan.com) — Rina Van Orden

How Not To Look Old
"Forget aging gracefully," writes Charla Krupp. "All right, I’m just going to come out and say it. Aging sucks." The beauty editor and style expert on NBC’s Today calls her book How Not to Look Old the baby boomer manifesto. She outlines a plan of attack to look Y & H (younger and hipper) instead of like an OL (old lady). The book isn’t about extreme makeovers — in fact, Krupp says, "we’re not going to join the Women Who Have Had Too Much Work Done club." Rather, she advocates booking an appointment with a dermatologist and taking advice she’s gleaned from beauty and fashion pros. Take a quiz to determine whether you’re low, medium, or high maintenance and then dive into tips on how to look 5, 10, even 20 years younger. For instance, bangs are an easy way to look chic, says Krupp, and after a certain age, just about everybody looks better with them. And nothing, she insists, ages a woman like dark lipstick and obvious lip liner. Ditto for thick, cakey foundation and dragon lady nails. Also aging: skirts that are too long or too short, and matchy-matchy outfits. "Looking younger will keep you in the game longer," says Krupp, "when everyone around you is a kid." Luscious Locks
Even successful face lifts and brow lifts can sometimes cause hair loss in the frontal brow line and temples. For men and women who have experienced hair loss due to plastic surgery, James B. DeYarman, DO of DeYarman Medical Group offers hair restoration using the innovative lateral slit method. In this procedure, DeYarman makes microscopic incisions in the scalp that match exactly with the grafts of one to two hair follicles to be inserted. Because the grafts and incisions are so small, DeYarman can create a very natural look next to the surrounding hair. "Today’s hair transplant is so precise that your own hair stylist will not know they are cutting transplanted hair," says DeYarman. Other types of hair loss can benefit from hair transplants utilizing the lateral slit technique as well. (800/FOR-HAIR, www.deyarmanmedicalgroup.com)
