Sunscreen is an easy
On September 8-9, San Diego will be one of four cities to welcome the first-ever Ride Without Limits, a two-day cycling event that will unite hundreds of supporters to raise awareness and funds for United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) and people with disabilities. Participants will ride up to 200 miles over two days, fully supported from registration to the finish line with fundraising tips, training tools, and encouragement by Ride Without Limits staff. A camp complete with tents, meals, showers, and medical services will be offered for the night. "The Ride Without Limits is an opportunity to push your limits while helping people with disabilities live full, independent, and productive lives," says David Carucci, executive director of UCP of San Diego County. Honorary chairperson for the San Diego Ride Without Limits event is Kimberly King of NBC 7/39. The cause hits close to home for King, who, for the last seven years, has "served as a celebrity waiter for the UCP Celebrity Waiter’s Luncheon," she explains, adding, "Last September, my little brother and sister-in-law gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Chloe, who was born with cerebral palsy." King’s prior involvement with UCP, and now her little niece, has brought her to a place where she feels she "must do something to give back and help raise money and awareness for cerebral palsy and for these amazing people. It is my mission." (858/571-5365, www.ucpsd.org)

Wash-In SPF
If you’re prone to forget sunscreen, protect yourself just by washing and wearing your clothes. Add one package of SunGuard to a load of laundry in warm or hot water, and take your T-shirts from an ultraviolet protection factor of 5 to a UPF of 30. "A white cotton T shirt has little, if any, SPF," says Donna Richardson, MD, medical director of Destinations Medical Spa in San Marcos. "You can buy expensive clothing that has been coated with chemicals to increase its native SPF or you could buy a $2 box of SunGuard" and be protected for the whole summer. SunGuard infuses your clothing with an invisible protective shield that will block more than 96 percent of the sun’s harmful rays. SunGuard won’t change the color or damage the material of your clothes, and will protect your skin whether the fabric is wet or dry. The product is also safe for children and those with sensitive skin, and is recommended by dermatologists. (866/871-3157, www.sunguardsunprotection.com)

The Power Of Qi
Del Mar natural energy activist Sheri Laine was guided to the heart and soul of Chinese medicine by her beloved Chinese master, Richard Teh-Fu Tan 'Kam pi,’ OMD. Laine began studying with him over 13 years ago "after practicing acupuncture in my own private clinic for four years. Once Tan deemed me a serious and deserving student, he opened up and shared with me the most amazing stories, treatment strategies, and secret herbal formulations." In her recent book, The EnerQi Connection — Demystifying Acupuncture, Laine helps readers understand the power of natural Qi (pronounced "chee") energy or life force, how it works, and how it can benefit your life. "By placing needles accurately in the body, we can strengthen weaknesses, sedate excesses, warm or cool the body, or disperse stagnation to once again allow a healthy flow of energy." L’Auberge VIP Card
Locals don’t always dine at or visit the spa at the hotels in their own town, but Del Mar residents may now be heading to L’Auberge more frequently due to a VIP card that offers special incentives for neighbors of the historic property. The card entitles Del Martians to a variety of exclusive discounts including 20 percent off guest rooms and dining at J.Taylor’s Restaurant, and 10 percent off spa services. As an added bonus, a portion of proceeds from the VIP card sales will go to Del Mar Heights School and Del Mar Hills Academy of Arts and Science. "We enjoy the support of Del Mar residents and want to show our appreciation to them," says Michael Slosser, general manager of L’Auberge Del Mar Resort & Spa. "The VIP card is our way of encouraging Del Mar residents to consider L’Auberge their home away from home. They get special treatment and discounts at the resort, and a portion of every dollar they spend will go to local schools." (858/793-6430, www.laubergedelmar.com)

Smooth Operator
A new line of glitzy shaving products recently landed at Do’s & Lipstick in Solana Beach. Arizona-based Whish offers potions, lotions, and brushes that not only look glamorous and smell delicious, but also promote smooth, healthy, silky skin. Founders Jesse Werner and his brother, Sam, created the line after Jesse’s wife one day ran out of shaving cream and asked to borrow his. The story goes that she swirled it on, shaved her legs, and declared the experience incredible — the only problem was the manly scent. After a year and a half of testing smells, ingredients, and brushes, Whish was born. For extra glamour, Whish Crystal Body Brushes are jeweled in hand-placed Swarovski crystals. (858/793-5477)
