George and Gail Knox with Hugh Davies
Monte Carlo In Casablanca
The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) is hosting its 31st annual Monte Carlo fundraiser on Saturday, September 8, at 7pm. This year’s theme, Monte Carlo in Casablanca (Come to Rick’s Place!), was selected by event co-chairs George and Gail Knox. The Museum’s galleries will be transformed into Rick’s Place, a ’40s-style nightclub and casino like the one Bogart frequented in the film Casablanca. The glamorous evening will take place at MCASD’s oceanfront La Jolla location, and will feature a cocktail hour with Champagne and caviar, dinner, and dancing under the stars. After dinner, guests will enjoy charity gambling, gourmet desserts, a silent auction, and a lively Moroccan-inspired disco. The Monte Carlo Gala serves as the primary annual fundraiser for MCASD, and has so far raised more than $4.8 million for MCASD’s exhibitions and education programs. Sponsorship opportunities are available. For more information or to purchase tickets, please contact Christine Kartchner. (858/454-3541, ext. 117, www.mcasd.org)

Symphony At Salk
Symphony at Salk returns to La Jolla on August 25 and benefits scientific research at the world-renowned Salk Institute for Biological Studies. The event will take place on the Theodore Gildred Court, which is framed on two sides by the working laboratories designed by world-renowned architect Louis I. Kahn and offers a stunning view of the Pacific Ocean. This year’s featured artist is Hershey Felder, noted playwright, composer, and actor who most recently dazzled audiences in George Gershwin Alone at The Old Globe. Guest conductor Thomas Wilkins will lead the San Diego Symphony for the third year in a row. Honorary chair of Symphony at Salk is internationally renowned artist Francoise Gilot-Salk, widow of Salk Institute founder Jonas Salk. Gilot-Salk’s artwork, In the Garden (1978), provides this year’s visual theme, expressing the wonders and discoveries she experienced as a child peering through her grandmother’s stained glass windows at the garden beyond. Event festivities include institute tours, gourmet box supper, and musical program. Proceeds directly benefit the groundbreaking biological research at the institute and support community programs, such as the Salk Mobile Science Lab and the High School Science Day.
