Dead Sea Scrolls Grand Opening
The San Diego Natural History Museum opened its much-awaited Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit with fanfare to honor the sponsors, benefactors, and patrons of the show. Top sponsors met on the roof for a reception followed by a gathering in the museum’s central atrium. The museum’s CEO, Michael Hager, opened the ceremonies after the sounding of the shofar, the traditional Jewish ram’s horn. Host Ted Waitt welcomed guests, Mayor Jerry Sanders introduced Israeli visitors Ehud Danoch, consul general from Los Angeles, and Shuka Dorfman, director of the Israeli Antiquities Authority. Title sponsors Joan and Irwin Jacobs gave an opening speech, and Eleanor Navarra recognized all who made the exhibit possible. Guests toured the exhibit, the most extensive to date in the world. — Sparkle Stiff, photos by Jennifer Nelson

Zoo RITZ
The San Diego Zoo’s 24th annual Rendezvous In The Zoo (RITZ) raised the highest dollar amount in its history, a record $1.5 million, due to the astonishing generosity of Conrad Prebys, who matched every $1 raised with $2 of his own. This year’s co-chairs were Katherine Kennedy and Robert Horsman, and their theme of Jungle Club: An Elegant Supper Club translated into a knockout party. It was a night to always remember.
