Sustainable Spa
When Angela Barker decided to open her own spa, she and her husband, Greg — a skilled carpenter by trade — wanted to do it their own way. Located in coastal Carlsbad, Spa Samudra’s philosophy is green through and through. "I live true to my life," explains Angela, who lives with her family on a sailboat run by solar and battery power. "I live organically and I work organically." Greg built out the space with eco-friendly materials, from bamboo flooring to water-based paint. The couple takes care not to be wasteful, which means glass instead of plastic and recycled/biodegradable items whenever possible. And the products at the spa’s skin care bar are organic and never tested on animals; if you buy from the Samudra line, you can even return with your empties and refill for half-price. Samudra offers a full spectrum of spa services, but be sure to try the Hot Stone Massage, a 70-minute exfoliating body scrub and hot-towel rubdown followed by a relaxing stone massage. Kyle Brown and client Christy MacFarlane

Fitness Phenom
Fitness triple-threat Kyle Brown takes a holistic approach to good health. The creator of the Fit 365 organic nutritional shake, which is carried nationwide, is also a clinical nutritionist and personal trainer. "I offer the whole package," says Brown. "With my clients, transformation goals are focused on improving every component of health: looking better and feeling better." He explains that clinical nutritionists are the natural-health version of registered dieticians — in his view, the metabolic value of food trumps counting every calorie and carb. And his personal training sessions — which Brown conducts out of a 600-square-foot, state-of-the-art studio in his Del Mar home two blocks from the beach — are efficient for busy clients on-the-go. "I teach people how their bodies work versus how a piece of machinery works," he explains. "I fit into 30 minutes what would take an hour at the gym." (858/794-7777, www.fit365.com)

Eau De Ed Hardy
Ed Hardy by Christian Audigier now has signature fragrances for men and women inspired by the iconic Ed Hardy tattoos. After partnering with Zalman Lekach’s new company, New Wave Fragances, Audigier created two edgy, sexy scents and sealed them into eye-popping bottles decorated with some of the line’s most famous designs. The women’s fragrance emanates a fruity floral scent with hints of tropical mango, wild strawberry, ruby red grapefruit, linden blossom, and freesia petals. The woody floral men’s fragrance combines citrus aromas with clary sage, thuja, mint, and sequoia for a masculine sharpness. The artist-designed bottles are available locally at Macy’s. Skinsational Savings
Skinsational Skin and Body Spa has decided not to throw a party for its third anniversary celebration, but rather pass on savings to clients to thank them for their continued support. Monday through Friday in September, the spa will offer incredible savings on two 50-minute Swedish Massages for $65 each ($66 total in savings) to any guest who brings a friend new to the spa. Skinsational will also offer daily enter-to-win giveaways for services and products, ten percent off retail on Tuesdays, and a grand prize drawing for two roundtrip tickets to Hawaii. "We are very grateful for the support we have received from the community throughout the past three years and wanted to find a way to show them our gratitude," says founder and CEO, Joyce Carboni. "We know that times are tough and feel that now, perhaps more than ever, people need to find a way to relax and rejuvenate." (760/434-8118,

Shining Souls
Del Mar’s Soul Shine recently celebrated its first year in business. To rejoice, the Soul Shine Wellness Network is now accepting members at a discounted rate to encourage community members to embark on personal journeys towards a self-empowered approach to wellness. The network provides access to an extensive roster of practitioners who are highly recommended by others, board certified and/or licensed when applicable, and embrace the Soul Shine philosophy of mind-body-spirit. According to Soul Shine co-founder Kymberly Nelson, "Right now we have over 40, and some are founding practitioners. Since [we’ve began] we’ve been signing up on average two to three practitioners per week." Following an East-meets-West philosophy to healing, specialists are available for life coaching, image consulting, cosmetic surgery, hypnotherapy, energy healing, meditation, financial planning, career coaching, and more. Members can also partake in featured workshops and seminars — up next is a four-week astrology workshop by Donna Heath designed to discover the goddess within. September’s featured offering is kundalini yoga taught by founding practitioner Shauna Piscitello. Kundalini is a "specific type of yoga designed to calm the mind, energize the body, and open the heart," explains Nelson. (858/793-1907, www.soulshine.com)
