Haute Holidays
This winter, high-voltage cocktail dresses offer a welcomed departure from long, constricting gowns. And glamour reigns supreme with options appearing in everything from bold satin jewel tones and sequined metallics to rich chocolate hues and oh-so-sexy black. Here, a few head-turning local finds guarantee to heat up the holidays. — Mia Stefanko, photography by Vincent Knakal, hair and makeup by Paula Mayer, models from Jet Set Model Management

Patricia Straight and Ryan Gonzales

Ryan’s Regalia
A grand opening party was recently held at Ryan’s Collection on Camino Del Mar in Del Mar. Named after owner Ryan Gonzales, son of Peaches en Regalia owner Patricia Straight and an active men’s buyer of 15 years, the store is poised to be a major player in the area offering more than 150 brands for both men and women including English Laundry, Earnest Sewn, Jhane Barnes, Michael Kors, Joe’s Jeans, AG Denim, 7 Diamonds, and ABS, to name a few. Gonzales says, "On recent market buying trips we noticed there has been a developing split between clothing that is upscale dressy for the masses to casual upscale and dressy that appeals to a young-minded fashionably aware customer." He adds, "We positioned this store to have a local-level attitude offering sandals, sunglasses, fun hats, jeans, and T-shirts blended with a twist towards upscale designer name-driven merchandise such as imported quality leather jackets and handbags." An added bonus — the store’s streetside location and the fact that it has eight designated parking spaces exclusively for clientele. Gonzales adds, "We believe in Del Mar’s community plan to strengthen Camino Del Mar with more retail business and contribute back the sales revenue so they can do great things with the city." Lili Zafar

Global Garb
For Lili Zafar, appointment-only might mean seven in the morning or eleven at night — whatever works best for her customer. Though Zafar operates a storefront, the Solana Beach boutique Lilipeach, it is her discerning eye and personalized service that solicit repeat visits. "I travel all around the world to find fabulous designers and high-fashion clothing," says the two-decade veteran of the fashion business. "It is all about cut, textile, quality, and design. Each piece has been made individually." Lilipeach only carries small quantities of each item, and when they’re gone, they’re gone. While her passport reflects her frequent globetrotting shopping trips — from Argentina to Europe to Thailand — the clothing Zafar carries demonstrates her firsthand knowledge of the female form. "I buy for real women," she says. "Not necessarily for a young, skinny woman." (858/449-5539) — AnnaMaria Stephens, photo by Kristy Ann Mann

Style Set In Stone
For Encinitas resident Maya Miller, jewelry making is a means of connecting her to her hometown. "I started making jewelry a couple years ago," she explains. "It started when I was traveling in Borneo, Indonesia, where I grew up. I found shops that sell these little stones on a string. I watched some of the locals weave the stones together and taught myself how to make the bracelets." Perfect for stuffing a stocking this season, her handmade stone bracelets are offered in both thin and wide styles, and feature semiprecious stones including tiger-eye, agate, lapis, aquamarine, jasper, onyx, turquoise, and more. Winter Wonderful
It may not be snowing in San Diego, but we can still delight in the spirit of the winter holidays with Tiffany & Co.’s festive jeweled charms. For winter sports aficionados, the skier is outfitted in diamonds and sapphires with an amethyst and emerald cap, and platinum skis and poles. The snowflake pendant captures the magic of fresh fallen snow in a charm of dazzling diamonds. Round brilliant diamonds trace a lacy snowflake pattern that circles the center diamond in perfect symmetry. We say let it snow. (619/297-7200, www.tiffany.com)
