A California New Year
Where will you be at midnight on December 31? Our Golden State offers a wide variety of ways to celebrate the arrival of a New Year - and many of them are conveniently close to home.

Schuss Your Way Into 2008
At Big Bear Lake, flaming torches will light up the night sky at 7pm on New Year's Eve as 250 skiers and snowboarders descend the Miracle Mile run at Snow Summit. The brilliant flames resemble a glowing red serpent slithering down the snow-covered mountain. This annual Torchlight Parade heralds the start of NYE reveling, however the slopes stay open until 9:30pm for those who prefer to ski first and party later. (www.bigbear.com)

Big Bear is only about two hours from San Diego, and the mountain resort provides a complete change of scenery for those who live near the coast. Lodging options include the AAA four-diamond Alpenhorn B&B — where cozy rooms and great breakfasts attract adults in search of a peaceful retreat — and the lakefront Windy Point Inn. Private home or condo rental is another popular alternative. (www.alpenhorn.com, www.windypointinn.com) The Mandoline Bistro, Big Bear’s best restaurant, is known for live jazz performances. On New Year’s Eve, Catz in the Hats, a smooth jazz band, will be playing in The Mandoline’s loft. Snow Summit and Bear Mountain ski resorts offer private ski and snowboarding lessons, day and night skiing, and runs that range from beginner to expert. (www.themandolinebistro.com)

Join The NYE Crowd At "The Happiest Place On Earth"
Disneyland is another popular place for families to ring in the New Year. In addition to the nightly 9:25pm fireworks, extended pyrotechnics will take place at midnight. There’s also an additional late-night performance of the Fantasmic! show — the park’s live musical spectacular featuring a 45-foot fire-breathing dragon. Closing time on New Year’s Eve is 2am, and the park will re-open at 8am on New Year’s Day.

Start The Year With The Sweet Scent Of Roses
Ever wish you had a close-up look at the floats in the Tournament of Roses Parade? Up until 1pm on December 31, you can watch finishing touches being made at the Rosemont Pavilion across from the Rose Bowl and at three other locations around Pasadena. To view the parade in comfort, reserve grandstand seats from Sharp Seating Company and — if you’re lucky — Rose Bowl game tickets can be purchased from Ticketmaster. (www.pasadenacal.com, www.sharpseating.com)

Camping out along the parade route on New Year’s Eve is a Pasadena tradition. If that isn’t your style, the five-diamond Ritz Carlton Huntington Hotel & Spa provides the area’s most luxurious lodgings; the four-diamond Westin Pasadena is a bit closer to the New Year’s action. (www.ritzcarlton.com, www.westin.com/pasadena) For upscale NYE dining, book a table at the Arroyo Chop House, where a five-course prix fixe menu will be offered. (www.arroyochophouse.com)

Have A Ball With A Big Band
The Yachtsmen, a 17-piece band, will play in the Casino Ball Room on Santa Catalina Island for the 35th Annual New Year’s Eve Celebration. Their music from the ’30s, ’40s, ’50, and ’60s will take guests back to the heyday of big bands. The gala includes a buffet dinner, photographs, wine, and party favors. Coat and tie are required; black tie is optional. (www.catalinachamber.com)

The Casino Building, built in 1929, is an Art Deco jewel perched on the edge of Avalon Bay. The ballroom gained national attention in the 1930s and ’40s when it hosted the big bands of Jimmy Dorsey, Woody Herman, and Harry James.

The Catalina Express fleet of high-speed boats carries passengers from Dana Point, Long Beach, and San Pedro to Catalina in just over an hour. (www.catalinaexpress.com) Island Express provides helicopter service. (www.islandexpress.com) The Hotel Villa Portofino and the five-room Inn on Mt. Ada (the former Wrigley Mansion) are two of the best lodging options. (www.hotelvillaportofino.com, www.innonmtada.com)

Party In The Desert
New Year’s Eve options beyond Southern California include Las Vegas, where fireworks will be launched simultaneously at midnight by seven resorts along The Strip. In addition, there will be serious partying at TAO in The Venetian, Pure at Caesars Palace, Body English at the Hard Rock, Jet at The Mirage, and Tryst at Wynn Las Vegas — to name a few.

Celebrate In The City
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has been coy about NYE fireworks happening in the city, but if tradition wins out — they’ll be bursting over the bay at midnight. In this case, One Market Restaurant will offer a great view in addition to their terrific food. The Carnelian Room at the top of the Bank of America building and the Top of the Mark in the InterContinental Mark Hopkins also offer panoramic vistas. Hornblower Cruises will provide front row seats for the fireworks, a four-course dinner, an open bar, and a band for dancing. Cruises leave from Pier 3 at the Embarcadero at 9pm. (www.hornblower.com)

Prefer something offbeat? The original 1925 version of Phantom of the Opera staring Lon Chaney will be screened at San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral at 7pm on New Year’s Eve. Well known New York organist Dorothy Papadakos will accompany the film on the cathedral’s Aeolian-Skinner organ. (www.gracecathedral.org)

Even more offbeat? Catch the 10:15pm show of Beach Blanket Babylon at Club Fugazi. The nation’s longest running musical review is packed with pop culture spoofs and outrageous costumes. The show ends at the stroke of midnight and includes a pastiche of the best and worst of 2007 — Beach Blanket Babylon style. (www.beachblanketbabylon.com) — Elizabeth Hansen

The Westgate Hotel

San Diego Hoteliers Have Heart
Across the county, San Diegans have pulled together to support those who lost their homes during the disastrous October fires. Local hotels and resorts are also helping by offering holiday season discounts and lodging packages — some just for fire victims and others we can all enjoy.

The Rancho Bernardo Inn, known for its golf course and spa, is offering a special rate of $139 with breakfast for those displaced by the fires. Rooms here are beautifully furnished in warm colors and come with flat screen TVs, wireless Internet, and private patios or balconies. Closer to Christmas, each room will have its own decorated tree, too. (www.ranchobernardoinn.com)

Downtown, The Westgate Hotel is offering a special rate of $149 for those who lost their homes. The elegant hotel, with its Persian carpets, crystal chandeliers, and French tapestries, is a perfect base for last-minute shopping at Horton Plaza. (www.westgatehotel.com)

The Hotel del Coronado’s holiday packages are available to all San Diegans. This year’s theme is Winter Garden, in honor of the 150th birthday of Kate Sessions, who designed and planted many of San Diego’s most famous landscapes — including the Del’s Garden Patio. The resort will be decked from head-to-toe with traditional Victorian decorations such as birds, flowers, and velvet ribbons. Over 100,000 glittering lights will add a festive glow to the hotel and its oceanfront ice skating rink.

The Del’s Sea & Skate package includes lodging, daily breakfast buffet, skating lessons, skate rental, and a Del snow globe. Rates start at $348 per night. The Making Memories package includes two night’s accommodations, daily breakfast buffet for two adults and one child, Victorian tea for mom, dad, and offspring, and a bedtime elf tuck-in — yes, by a real elf — for the little ones. Rates for the two-night package start at $910. (www.hoteldel.com/holidays)

The Four Seasons Resort Aviara is promoting our great winter weather with their Never Ending San Diego Summer room and buffet breakfast package. The hotel offers beach butler service, a surf concierge, and panoramic Pacific Ocean views from the Tranquility Pool. In addition, the spa is equipped with 20 treatment rooms, an indoor solarium lounge area, whirlpools, saunas, steam rooms, and dressing areas. The spa also features a couple’s suite with an intimate lounge area with marble fireplace and shower for two, an attached treatment room with side-by-side massage tables, and a private patio with whirlpool. Lodging rates range from $295 to $650, depending on the type of room. (www.fourseasons.com/aviara)

In La Jolla, La Valencia Hotel and The La Jolla Playhouse are offering a package that includes deluxe ocean-facing lodging, two tickets to Cry-Baby, a pre-show supper with wine pairings in the Sky Room, transportation to the theatre, signature Whaler cocktails in The Whaling Bar and Grill, breakfast, and overnight valet parking. The cost for one night is $1070; two nights are $1765. (www.lavalencia.com)

The Grand Del Mar, North County’s newest resort, is home to a full-service spa, an 18-hole golf course, and Addison — the hotel’s esteemed signature restaurant. The introductory rate — in effect through the end of the year — is $395. (www.thegrandelmar.com) — Elizabeth Hansen
