Bravo, Bravo
Spread throughout The Westgate Hotel, this was the place to be for over-the-top entertainment, incredible food, and as always, frustration because of the impossibility of seeing, hearing, and tasting it all. The evening started off with the presentation of lifetime achievement awards to Craig Noel and Frankie Laine, and the finale was rooftop fireworks. But really, the entire evening was a blast. — Nanette Martin, photos by S. McCoy

  Sensational Salk
Sensational Salk was the event that celebrated the 40th anniversary of scientific discoveries made at the institute over the years. The festivities included Champagne and caviar, continued with a seated dinner under a tent, and concluded with medals awarded to Donald Metcalf, BSc, and Paul Farmer, MD, PhD. If it were up to chairs Marilyn and Doug Sawyer, there would have been one for Dr. Tony Hunter, who discovered a drug that saved Marilyn’s sister’s life years ago. — Nanette Martin

  Crystal Ball
This year’s Crystal Ball Gala at the Del Mar Country Club was a glittering gathering of angels, many of whom work tirelessly all year to keep Casa de Amparo’s many programs going. Guests at the black tie affair, which was adorned with abundant bouquets of orchids and crystal chandeliers, enjoyed sumptuous cuisine by chef Jeffrey Strauss of Pamplemousse fame and the dancing music of The Kicks. — Sparkle Stiff

Candlelight Ball
At the 76th Annual Candlelight Ball, guests entered over a red carpet and past a fantasy of flowers into the foyer of the Del Mar Country Club. As soon as chairwoman and keynote speaker Betty Knight Scripps and guest of honor Cliff Robertson entered, they were greeted by event sponsors and other honored guests. Over 400 were seated to a sumptuous dinner of lobster, caviar, lamb, and Chocolate Decadence. Thanks to a $1 million challenge gift from Scripps, the ball raised $2.5 million for the hospital. — Sparkle Stiff
