Candlelight Ball
Practically no other party in town can hold a candle to the Candlelight Ball — a
77-year-long tradition that draws the best and the brightest — and most elegantly dressed — to one of the most exquisite surroundings, garlanded with hundreds of thousands of pink and white roses, tulips, and peonies. General chairman Betty Knight Scripps personally gave $1.25 million to ensure the party’s success — a matching grant met by nearly 50 participants, sponsors, and underwriters. Among the honored guests were Academy Award-winner Cliff Robertson and notables from Scripps Memorial and Scripps Health with their spouses, among them: Eve and Gary Fybel, Rosemary and Chris Van Gorder, Cherie and John Engle; plus June and Neil Ash, Jean Hahn Hardy with husband, John, and Betsy and Papa Doug Manchester, to name a few.

  Fur Ball
Although a last minute venue change due to rain meant that pets were no longer able to attend, the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA’s 20th annual Fur Ball was still all about the animals, raising over $240,000 to help animals and sustain vital community programs. Supporters gathered at the Manchester Grand Hyatt for a cocktail reception, boutique animal shopping, live auction, dancing, and an elegant dinner by honoree Jeffrey Strauss of Pamplemousse Grille. The event was chaired by Lori Walton, Patti Mix, and Elizabeth Davis. — Jane Shiomi

  Jump For Life
At San Diego Chargers linebacker Donnie Edwards’ Third Annual "Jump for Life" Celebrity Waiter Dinner at Jeffrey Strauss’ famed Pamplemousse Grille, 40 celebrity athletes came to support the event, most serving as waiters at the reception and dinner. The program fights childhood obesity by teaching nutrition, physical fitness, and goal-setting, helping kids avoid the sedentary lifestyle so prevalent among children today. This highly-successful event netted $285,000. — Paul Andrews

Nutcracker Gala
City Ballet of San Diego was the first organization to hold an event at the new Sunset Ballroom at Paradise Point Resort & Spa. In keeping with the location, the company’s 12th annual gala had a tropical theme, and guests donned their best tropical eveningwear while enjoying a Champagne reception, a silent auction, and a live auction led by celebrity auctioneer Richard Lederer of KPBS’ A Way With Words. Dinner featured cuisine by chef Amy DiBiase of Baleen Restaurant, accompanied by cabaret entertainment. — Jane Shiomi, photos by Bob Stefanko
  Strolling For Justice
The Wells family estate in Poway was the setting for a fashionable fundraiser to benefit the San Diego Family Justice Center. Supporters gathered to meet and mingle with noted fashion designer Nicole Miller and enjoy fall and holiday fashions, hors d’oeuvres and beverages, desserts, and, of course, the chance to make a difference. The San Diego Family Justice Center aims to stop family violence and provide long-term support for victims and children.
