Iconic Images
This month, La Jolla's Morrison Hotel Gallery is hosting an intriguing display of a legendary photographer's work. Baron Wolman, The Rolling Stone Years will feature works by Baron Wolman, Rolling Stone Magazine's first chief photographer. During his career with Rolling Stone from 1967-1970, Wolman captured images of some of the most prolific rock and roll musicians of the era including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd, and many more. His raw images depict the times as they were and musicians doing what they loved. Wolman will be present on the opening night, July 29 from 6-9pm, and the exhibition will continue through August 27. Maloof At Mingei
Woodworker Sam Maloof crafts some of the most harmonious and serene furniture imaginable. Exquisite wood grains are revealed in smoothly- and masterfully-fashioned chairs, tables, and music stands. That Maloof received a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, fondly referred to as the "genius" grant, will surprise no one who takes the time to see the retrospective of his work being exhibited at Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park through October 15 of this year. Warhol Comes To San Diego
Don't miss Andy Warhol's Dream America at the San Diego Museum of Art. The exhibition contains more than 100 prints of what have come to be iconic images. Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, Campbell's Soup cans, Mao Zedong, Mick Jagger - you get the idea. The portraits, in varying colors and in series, evoke a sense of watching movies. The images change as the eye moves across the pictures, each frame revealing something different about the subject. Warhol was the product of a glorious advertising age, a commercial arts baby who experimented with the silkscreen process and created his own signature look. His take on the 1960s and '70s was right on the mark. He loved America's instant culture mentality and it loved him. The show continues through September 10. (619/232-7931, www.sdmart.org)

Dutch Master
Innate attention to detail and incredible perfectionism is only the beginning when describing this local artist. Rene Wagemakers, originally from The Netherlands with an extensive painting background, has been focusing on oils for the past ten years. By meeting his subjects prior to composing his pieces, he is able to get a feel of the individual, enabling him to determine which details to include in his work. "Portraits are my passion," states Wagemakers, who enjoys the challenge of relaying personality through individual elements. His portraits come alive through his use of color and are so realistic they have been mistaken for photographs. (760/420-4789, www.reneportraits.com) - Alanna Trimble
CenterLight Gallery Opens In Birdrock
Los Angeles artist, Irene Carranza, and native La Jolla artist, Maria Repke, recently opened the CenterLight Gallery in the Birdrock district of La Jolla. The gallery features works by the two painters, as well as other internationally renowned artists. Carranza's works celebrate femininity, beauty, and strength, which she combines with inventive surrealist settings. Her works have been exhibited in galleries worldwide, and she has completed commissions for the San Antonio Winery, Mitsubishi Motors, and Nordstrom, among others. Repke produces still lifes of exceptional realism, yet conveys a sense of her own artistic voice in every piece. With a modern sense of style and color, her work uses natural lighting and themes that evoke harmony and balance.
"Birdrock is home to a burgeoning art movement," says Carranza. "This is the place to be for independent artists and we want to be on the ground floor of what is going to be an important regional art scene." (858/456-8188, www.centerlightgallery.com) - Alicia Garcia
