A Golden Celebration
R&C Staff Photographer
It was 50 years ago that San Diego came together as a community
to dedicate Sharp Memorial Hospital. A Tapestry of Gold: the 50th
Anniversary of Sharp Memorial Gala was the occasion for 1,000 prominent
San Diegans to celebrate the last half century of Sharp’s
achievements in technology and quality healthcare. More than $1
million was raised toward a $50 million capital campaign planned
to enable the new Sharp Memorial Hospital and Sharp Metropolitan
Medical Campus to provide better healthcare to San Diego for the
next 50 years. – Ana Kessler |

Female
Super Heroes
How do they find the time, energy and heart to do all they do?
We are so very fortunate to have a few women in San Diego who go
above and beyond. For 40 years the annual Women of Dedication luncheons
have been held to salute outstanding volunteer efforts given to
The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary. This year, 14 special
women were recognized at the Decades of Dedication event for their
selfless contributions that have been shared by various cultural,
educational, religious, charitable, and philanthropic organizations.
The entire community joins in thanking them for their efforts. – Shana

It took a little while – a couple of hours, in fact – for
the sponsors, who had contributed $100,000 to this year’s
big Rancho Santa Fe Community Center fundraiser to start filing
into The Inn’s Garden Room for the silent auction. The Sponsor’s
Party, which officially began at 4pm, was just starting to swing
by 5:30, with guests pouring over the bidding lists and vying for
some of the most delectable items offered to date. They also fanned
out onto the patio, where the Black Jack, Craps and Roulette tables
awaited them, to try their luck. That was before they moved into
the vast, magnificent tent on the front lawn to feast on spring
rolls with plum sauce, mixed greens with goat cheese, grilled filet
with Port sauce, and chocolate opera cake. Meanwhile, they listened
and danced to a great rock band and bid on live auction items.
The traditional Golden Retriever puppy fetched $4250. The total
amount raised is still being figured. – Sparkle Stiff |

Bank of California, San Diego Magazine, Hyatt Regency La Jolla,
Neiman Marcus, Absolut Vodka, and Pfizer La Jolla. Congratulations’ Mama. – Tera

Mingei International’s 27th anniversary celebration, was
planned and attended by many of the most revered names in San Diego.
Audrey Geisel, Darlene Davies, and Jeanne Jones were just some
luminaries who shone magnificently.
There were tributes, proclamations — from both the city and
the county — and good feelings all around. Funds from the

Possibilities

Magic is a word that is perhaps somewhat overused. But when the
Scripps Cancer Center uses new technologies such as diagnostic
mammograms, ultrasound, or a biopsy to detect cancer in its earliest
stages, there is a significant reduction in mortality rates from
the disease, and that is miraculous. Therefore, when the recent
Scripps Magic of Life gala selected its name, the appellation was
an extremely appropriate one. Even the dessert was clever: a chocolate
top hat filled with a “magical” rabbit and wand received
many appreciative comments. This 14th annual Spinoff Auction was
a well-attended fundraiser that garnered monies to support new
cancer treatments, which will offer hope to those for whom traditional
therapies have failed. No slight-of-hand trick could have produced
a more splendid result. — Shana K. Wilson |

Saturday Night
Fever
The Gillispie School’s annual spring dinner auction and fundraiser
expertly chaired by parent Kristi Pieper was held Saturday, April
30 at the beautiful Hyatt Regency La Jolla. This year’s theme,
Disco Fever, had parents and friends dancing before dinner was
served and well into the evening. Attendees came to the event dressed
in 70s bell-bottom pants, leisure suits, go-go boots and mini-skirts.
Following a cocktail hour and silent auction, attendees were served
a delicious spinach and goat cheese stuffed chicken entrée.
The children’s magnificent art projects were the focus of
the live auction and were greeted with enthusiastic bidding. The
Gillispie School is an independent, co-educational school for students
in early childhood through the sixth grade. The Gillispie program
is designed to provide an enriching education in a safe, nurturing
environment. The school strives to graduate students who are enthusiastic
about learning, respect diverse backgrounds and talents, and exhibit
strength of character. — Ana Kessler |
