Full Plates
This winter was a soggy one, but now we can put our galoshes aside and invite friends over for outdoor brunches and dinner parties. It’s time to break out the prettiest spring dishes and linens and send out the invitations. Happily, the joys of al fresco fetes work both ways; it’s delightful to make a table look beautiful and creative for special friends, and it’s equally wonderful to be a guest for whom a special effort has been made. This year the tableware is more fun and colorful than ever. Hot salmons, cool turquoises,
lemon yellows, brilliant oranges, and tropical greens make it easy to entertain. Let’s celebrate our great fortune to be able to party outdoors until dawn’s early light. — Ana Kessler

A Family Tradition Branches Out
Upholstery Workroom in San Diego has not only changed its name, but its services as well. No longer just limited to upholstery, the newly named Garcia Furniture Designs, Inc. — named after owner Leonard Garcia — offers custom designed furniture using top of the line materials.

“Clients often have an idea what they want,” says Garcia. “They say ‘use these cushions and these arms,’ and so we build it to their desires. But sometimes they don’t know what they want, and in that case we now work with designer Kelly Kaplan. She’ll design the piece and we’ll build it.”

The Garcia family has long prided themselves on their traditions of Old World craftsmanship and it shows in their work. They’ll even make house calls, so clients can get an idea of how their furniture will look in their home. (858/792-9517) — Ryan Thomas

Treasures Trove
The Tommy Bahama look is one of the most coveted and well loved in the world of casual fashion. But clothing isn’t their only artform; their vintage-inspired classic furnishings for the entire home are stunning, with louvers, cane, rattan, and leather in a personality-rich, distinctly recognizable mix of both comfort and pizzazz.

Treasures on Miramar Road carries Tommy Bahama, Henredon, Drexel Heritage, Bernhardt, Maitland Smith, and Century among their quality inventory. They are also the exclusive purveyors of the notable and distinctly American line of Stickley designed furniture. — Shana K. Wilson

Sink About It
Hand crafted wash basins are a symbol of elegance, echoing a time when designers employed sculpture to explore artistic contours. While not strictly a washbasin, this natural stone overmount sink is a remarkable piece of art in its own right. Resting atop a hand carved pedestal, it includes holes for faucets, and is cut from rustic spring green granite. At 33 inches wide and 22 inches tall, it’s an eye-catching addition to any bathroom, though perfectly suited for garden placement as well. It can be found at Stones Unlimited on Miramar Road.
