Stunner Shades
With the summer months upon us, it’s important to protect our eyes from the sun’s harmful rays — and why not do so in style. Whether you prefer more traditional, simple frames or fashion-forward glitzy ones, be sure to choose a pair that offers equal amounts of UV protection and glamour. Here are several pairs that might just catch your eye. — Mia Stefanko, photos by Vincent Knakal

Ebony Fashion Fair
The famed Ebony Fashion Fair this year was deemed "Stylishly Hot." It was definitely that and more. In fact, it was so hot, it sizzled, with its vivid colors and tip-top staging. The show’s 49th annual production was opulent, high style, and sexy. Guests, many of whom return every year, have come to expect the finest international couture on gorgeous models, all set to snappy music and graphics. They weren’t disappointed. Haute couture and ready-to-wear garments on Ebony’s runway were stunning. San Diego chair for the widely touring show was Helen Martin Hicks, with proceeds going to support Las Munecas — Friends of Elementary Institute of Science.

Style Maven
Just because you live in Southern California doesn’t mean you can’t be on the style pulse of big cities like Los Angeles or New York. In fact, Annie Loos, proprietor of Mog & Rue clothing boutique, sees to it that her customers are some of the best dressed in San Diego County. After teaching for many years, she opened her boutique in the Lumberyard six months ago. Here, the pages of Vogue and In Style come to life with labels like Fred Segal, Ron Herman, and Voom. "I spent time looking at the clothing options here and I wanted to bring different lines to the area," Loos says. "We needed a place where you could find dresses for opening day events." In addition to printed silk dresses by Bilingual, she also carries Iron Army jeans exclusively in San Diego. This summer, Loos is helping to introduce a whole new generation to the world of fashion by hosting fashion sketch classes for aspiring designers ages 8 to 14.
