Best Air Charter:
Schubach Aviation
(Runner-Up: Jet Source)
Schubach Aviation is not only San Diego’s premiere charter aircraft company, it’s also one of the largest on-demand air charter carriers in the U.S. The company offers chartered flights to anywhere in the continental U.S., Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. General manager Roy Irwin says, "Schubach Aviation places heavy emphasis on building and maintaining long-term relationships. Personal touches are a key ingredient. We go out of our way to cater to our guests. We recently flew two couples from Kona to San Diego in a Challenger 601. During the flight, they were served the meal they had requested, which included Beluga caviar on toast points, steak and lobster, a specially selected wine, and Champagne with dessert." With service like this, it’s no wonder Schubach has been voted Best Air Charter by our readers three years in a row. (760/929-0307, www.schubachaviation.com) — Elizabeth Hansen

Best Vacation Destination:
Maui
(Runner-Up: Cabo San Lucas)
So what do Ranch & Coast readers like about Maui? Nearly everything, it seems. Some said Maui is their favorite spot because they can snorkel with sea turtles; others commented on the scenic beauty, the great restaurants, and the fabulous resorts. A few adventurous people said that hiking on Haleakala — the largest dormant volcano in the world where a beautiful sunrise appears to rise out of the crater — is worth the effort of getting up before dawn. Helicopter tours over beaches, waterfalls, and rugged cliffs are other favorite activities, as is golf on the island’s numerous lush courses.

Best Local Hotel:
The Grand Del Mar
(Runner-Up: The Grande Colonial La Jolla)
Papa Doug Manchester has done it again. The Grand Del Mar combines the rich decorative arts of Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Morocco with world-class recreation facilities. The 249-room luxury hotel located east of I-5 near Del Mar offers four swimming pools, tennis courts, a Renaissance-inspired spa, and San Diego’s only Tom Fazio-designed golf course. Dining options include the renowned Addison, as well as five other restaurants and cafes. However, it’s the beautiful 200-seat chapel that really sets the Grand Del Mar apart from other San Diego area hotels. Looking up at the stained-glass windows, one bride-to-be remarked, "I can’t think of a more wonderful place to get married." (858/314-2000, www.thegranddelmar.com)
