Kids Korps — An Era of Elegance
Since its founding a dozen years ago, Kids Korps USA has succeeded in bringing American youth to a surprising level of generosity by teaching them to volunteer. At this year’s gala, guests dressed to the nines and filled the ballroom at The US Grant to dine and bid on myriad auction items. Larry King again served as master of ceremonies, with an added bonus of Suzanne Somers appearing alongside. Event chairs were Connie and Bill McNally, Karen and Stuart Tanz, Stephanie Kourie, Tiffany Mahoney, and our own Collette and Bob Stefanko. The event grossed $550,000 for the organization.

Fashion Fundraiser for Seacrest Village
"I’d rather be dancing than talking," Jo Arenson told the crowd that turned out for the 19th Annual Fashion Show & Luncheon to benefit Seacrest Village Retirement Communities. Arenson was honored for her energy, enthusiasm, and dedication to Seacrest, which provides care for San Diego’s elderly community. Joyce Glazer was honorary chair of the event, which featured a fashion show by Neiman Marcus. Mistress of ceremonies was Phyllis Schwartz, president and general manager of NBC 7/39.

A Notable Affair
The San Diego Chamber Orchestra Guild hosted its 19th annual gala auction at La Costa Resort and Spa. The aptly chosen musical theme was demonstrated by beautiful signage shaped like violins designed by Guild member Lyn Lloyd-Smith and an auction item of violins handpainted by local artists. Guests of the event, chaired by Guild president Violet MacDonald, enjoyed a Champagne reception, live and silent auctions, dinner, and dancing to the music of Marty Conley and his Big Band.

Angels Among Us
More than 1,000 people attended the Salvation Army’s 42nd Annual Women of Dedication luncheon. Darlene Davies chaired the event, which honored 15 outstanding women whose records of accomplished volunteerism covered such diverse fields as education, medicine, the arts, and social services. This year’s theme, Angels Among Us, aptly describes the honorees. These volunteers work very hard for the good of others in the community. They seek no recognition, but are certainly worthy of being called Women of Dedication.

Library Guild Fashion Show
The Rancho Santa Fe Library Guild brought an outstanding collection to town: Lourdes Chavez. The Bob Baker family, Jean Kellogg, and Jere and Joyce Oren headed the list of sponsors who helped make the show a reality. Chavez was surprisingly modest when she came out, genuinely impacting her audience with her smiling models, highly textured fabrics, and elegant style. Donna Ferrier chaired the event, with Vivien U heading up publicity, and Susan Appleby and Nancy Hillgren seeing to the catering.

Sounds of Hope
More than $650,000 was raised at a benefit for Rady Children’s Hospital Asthma & Immunology Department, thanks to a little star power. The chart-topping Goo Goo Dolls entertained a sell-out crowd at the fourth annual Sounds of Hope for Children concert, presented by the Hospital Auxiliary’s Carmel Valley Unit at Schubach Aviation’s hangar. Marilyn Nolen and Judy Rowles chaired the event, which was emceed by KUSI’s Sandra Maas and also featured cocktails, dinner, dancing, and a live auction.

The Circus Cometh
Patrons of the Prado, a group of influential women who raise funds to help support Balboa Park’s museums and arts organizations, recently held a reception at the Fleet. The event, chaired by Judy Burer and Lola Green, honored the directors and board chairs of those organizations and introduced the group’s annual benefit gala, Circus in the Park, to be held in the Organ Pavilion on July 14. The reception featured appearances by such denizens of the circus as a juggler and several clowns.

Rock The Casbah
The Olivenhain estate of Amy and Matt Battiata was transformed into Mo’ Rockin’ Shoppin’, a Moroccan marketplace and fundraiser for Rady Children’s Hospital. It was all part of Glamourama 2007, the annual event presented by the North Coast Unit of the hospital’s auxiliary, complete with tarot card readings, henna tattoo artists, and, of course, belly dancing. Julez Bryant designed a heart necklace for the occasion, with proceeds earmarked for the hospital’s Stein Emergency Care Center.
