Joint Relief
Del Mar’s new Institute of Specialized Medicine, founded by Alexander R. Shikhman, MD, PhD, FACR, takes an integrative approach to the treatment of arthritis and autoimmune disorders. "Joint pain and various forms of arthritis are extremely common these days, but people aren’t always sure where to go," explains Shikhman, who adds that patients should seek treatment as soon as they begin to experience chronic pain or inflammation. "Joint pain is the first sign of arthritis," he says. "Joint pain tells you something wrong is going on with your joints and you need to be seen." Shikhman and his staff combine state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and treatments with alternative therapies such as acupuncture, massage, and dietary modifications. Among the cutting-edge offerings is shockwave therapy, which softens the muscles with sound waves — it’s FDA-approved but hard to find outside Europe. Shikhman is also working with Restorative Remedies, a locally based nutraceutical company, to develop a line of food supplements for patients with arthritis and related conditions.
