Sue Wong brown silk cocktail dress with sequin and bead details and fringe elements from The Rare Earth in Del Mar’s Flower Hill Promenade and The Forum at Carlsbad
Night Lights
With the social whirl about to hit warp speed, it’s never too soon to find that perfect LBD (little black dress) for a holiday cocktail party, or an evening gown for that sophisticated soiree. This season, silk, satin, and sequins abound. Velvet and lace lend a romantic touch. And ruffles flourish. Go short with a swirly skirt, or long and slinky, and slit to there. Play up your décolleté with a daring neckline, or put the focus on a beautiful back with crisscrossed straps. Whether dreamy and demure, lacy, or decidedly racy, the season’s gowns give us something to say "cheers" about.

Universal Style
UNIV, a new boutique featuring unique footwear, apparel, and accessories, recently opened in downtown Encinitas next to Hansen’s. Featuring brands including Stussy, Creative Recreation, Zoo York, New Balance, Adidas, Nike, and Vans, along with art-driven brands like Crooks & Castles, Coup De Grace, Hellz Bellz, and Soda, the store aims to represent lines and cultural items that are not currently represented in this coastal area. "These are things that we have experienced and grown accustomed to in New York, Japan, London and all of our other travels," explains Tim Swart, who owns the shop with Mirko Mangum, a longtime friend. The two, both with deep roots in the action sports footwear and apparel market, met when Mangum was a professional skateboarder and Swart was working for his shoe sponsor at the time. UNIV’s interior decor is a twist on the modern beach aesthetic and features vintage books and furniture, along with a few surprises. (760/942-8647, www.univ-shop.com) — Mia Stefanko

Solid Gold Support
As much as we love to support the various causes those colored plastic bands represent, they’re not always the most fashion-forward accessory. But now, a limited-edition 18-karat white or yellow gold bracelet based on the Livestrong yellow wristband is available for those who glamorously want to support the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF). The wristband, created by Kendra Scott Design, commemorates the 10th anniversary of the day Armstrong (now a survivor) was diagnosed with cancer — October 2, 1996. To honor the day, 10,296 bracelets will be produced and each will retail for $10,296, with a significant portion going directly to the LAF. Each band is engraved with the LIVESTRONG brand that contains a yellow diamond set in the "O." The men’s band is a cuff design, while the women’s band is an oval-shaped bangle with a clasp. Both versions are inscribed inside with the LAF’s slogan, "Unity is Strength." Kendra Scott, founder and president of Kendra Scott Design, is undertaking this effort to honor the memory of her stepfather, Robert Ricks III, who lost his battle with cancer a year before Armstrong began his own fight against the disease. "I wanted to use my skills and the resources of my company to help people whose lives have been touched by cancer," says Scott. "And I can think of no better way to keep the memory of my stepfather alive." The bands will be available as special order items online. (www.10296.com)
