Tom Jones

Paddling For Pristine Oceans
On November 3, San Diegans are invited to come out and welcome extreme endurance athlete and environmental activist Tom Jones, who will be on the last leg of a record-setting 1,250-mile expedition down the entire coast of California on nothing more than a 14-foot paddleboard. Jones aims to bring worldwide attention to the problem of plastic pollution in our oceans and its impact on marine life. His arrival in San Diego marks the end of a journey that began on August 4 in Crescent City and has taken him through beautiful but often cold and shark-infested waters. "Most people don’t realize that more than 50 percent of marine litter is in the form of plastic, in areas of the Pacific Ocean plastic outweighs plankton by a six to one ratio," says San Diego Coastkeeper spokesperson Danielle Miller. A paddle out and beach cleanup event will take place in Jones’ honor on November 3 at 9am at Ocean Beach Pier. The public is invited to join Jones and local celebrity surfers to protect the ocean. (A shore stop will also take place in Cardiff on November 1.) (www.sdcoastkeeper.org, www.californiapaddle.com) — Mia Stefanko

Governor Schwarzenegger applauding the
historic voter-approved infrastructure project groundbreaking

Governor Schwarzenegger
In Solana Beach
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was in town on October 15 at the Lomas Santa Fe Plaza in Solana Beach for the groundbreaking of the first project in California funded by Proposition 1B, which was championed by Schwarzenegger and approved last year by voters. The proposition will ease congestion along San Diego’s North Coast Corridor by adding eight miles of carpool lanes on Interstate 5 and Interstate 805, reconstructing the Lomas Santa Fe interchange, and extending Carroll Canyon Road under Interstate 805.
