San Diego Likes It Hot
As it often is with superstars whose lives are cut short, their presence lives on in iconic imagery. Elvis, James Dean, Bogart, and Buddy Holly all went down in history as men who still had more to offer the world. But perhaps no female celebrity's death has resonated as much as Marilyn Monroe's. She remains, still today, the ideal of the bombshell: witty, flirty, curvy, feigning a naiveté that turns men into putty. Madonna copied Monroe's look from the Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend musical number when she recorded her Material Girl video in '84, and recently, Christina Aguilera stole her look in an attempt to class up her act. But neither has captured the glow that was Marilyn. In the days before Monroe's untimely passing on August 5, 1962, she was in the middle of taking photos for a book about her life. These photos, snapped by George Barris in Santa Barbara, are some of the rarest and least seen pictures of her. Beginning on October 8, these and other lesser-known photos — all part of the Edward Weston Collection — will be exhibited at the Coronado Museum of History and Art, not far from the Hotel del Coronado where Monroe filmed Some Like It Hot. The exhibit, Marilyn At 80: Some Still Like It Hot, will commence with both online and live auctions of these authentic photographs with proceeds benefiting the San Diego Balboa Theater. The event will last through November with a final party and viewing of Monroe's films at the Del, and an auction of Monroe's raciest nude photos at Stingaree downtown. Monroe's 80th birthday was in June, but celebrations abound all year (check www.marilynmonroe.com for a list of events). It's nice to think that after 80 years, she's still giving. There's a song to be sung here, but no one could ever do it as memorably as she already did that night at Madison Square Garden so long ago. So we'll just humbly say happy birthday, Marilyn. A Binational Celebration
The San Diego Natural History Museum's sixth annual Dos Aguilas Binational Fiesta will take place on October 14, honoring Christy Walton of National City, CA and Jackson Hole, WY and Rodolfo Ogarrio of Mexico City. Both have been instrumental in raising funds and awareness of environmental issues in the binational region. This annual fundraiser benefits the San Diego Natural History Museum's binational research and education programs, while furthering the museum's mission to express commitment to binational understanding, education, and partnership within the Southern California and Baja California peninsula region. Guests will experience gourmet food provided by restaurants from both sides of the border, as well as live music and entertainment and a silent auction. (619/232-3821, www.sdnhm.org)

Mexican Art At Mingei
A handsome banner gracing an outside wall of Mingei International Museum in Escondido announces the current exhibition, Artes de Mexico. Upon entering the museum, the visitor discovers a beautifully curated show that is actually comprised of two separate, but related, exhibitions, both highly engaging. One, Pre-Columbian Art of Mexico, highlights numerous pieces, among them a number of Zapotec rugs. The second show is Folk Art of Mexico, a fascinating and varied collection of more than several hundred objects, all of which were made for daily use and formed of natural materials. There are baskets, dolls, puppets, and flags, and each is visually intriguing. Particularly outstanding are clay works of Teodora Blanco of Santa Maria Atzompa, Oaxaca. Artes de Mexico will continue through January 15.

San Diego Authors' Guide To Halloween Reading
When most people think of horror novelists, they think of Stephen King and Dean Koontz. "But there are so many more, and most of them twice as talented," says Paul Stuart, co-publisher of Punk Horror, a local small press whose first anthology will be out this year featuring such horror writers as John Shirley (The Crow) and Christa Faust (Snakes On A Plane). If you're curious what unknown books would provide a fun scare this Halloween season, join Stuart and other local San Diego horror authors due to be featured in the anthology on Oct 26 from 7-9pm at the Borders bookstore in Mission Valley as they discuss the modern day horror classics that have inspired them and read from their own works. Stuart and partners David Agranoff and Gabriel Llanas have designed their press to solely benefit charities — the first proceeds will benefit domestic abuse shelters.
