Walk The Walk
As October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, fundraising walks will be held throughout Southern California to raise money for breast cancer research, education programs, and treatment for those facing the disease. The walks also seek to raise awareness about prevention, early detection, and the importance of mammograms. Join the American Cancer Society in its Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Balboa Park on October 21. Open to men, women, and children, this noncompetitive walk has no registration fee or minimum fundraising amount required. Last year, participants across the country helped raise over $40 million. (makingstrides.acsevents.org) On October 28, Walk for Hope in Los Angeles will host a 5k walk beginning at the City of Hope National Medical Center and Beckman Research Institute. Along with the walk, participants can enjoy entertainment, sponsor booths, and giveaways. Registration fees are $25 for adults and $15 for children under 12. (www.cityofhope.org/walkforhope/la) The Susan G. Komen San Diego Race for the Cure 5k run/walk has over 15,000 participants and will be held in Balboa Park on November 4. Interested walkers can join a team or form their own and register online. You can also help by making a donation or volunteering to help at the event. (www.sdkomen.org)

Pharmaca
A grand opening celebration was recently held at La Jolla’s new Pharmaca Integrative Pharmacy on Girard Avenue. Guests enjoyed wine and hors d’oeuvres and a Dr. Hauschka Daily Face Care Kit. Founder Barry Perzow discussed the company’s unique approach to delivering conventional and natural health solutions with medical expertise — including pet medications — all under one roof. "We’re not just filling prescriptions — we’re giving sound advice in an environment that emphasizes patient advocacy and preventative health care," Perzow says. In a nutshell, Pharmaca operates unique pharmacies that combine prescription drug and over-the-counter products with natural, complementary, and personal body care products. The staff consists of professional pharmacists, naturopaths, homeopaths, herbalists, nutritionists, and estheticians. Services and products include prescription dispensing, private consultations, a beauty bar managed by licensed estheticians, herbal and dietary supplements, homeopathic remedies, over the counter medications, and select healthy snacks, nutrition bars, organic chocolate, nuts, and beverage items. Since 2000, the Pharmaca chain has expanded to 15 locations, continually striving to revolutionize the way Americans find solutions to personal health care problems. Supporting Challenged Athletes
Ten years ago, Warren Frank of San Diego Rustic lost his leg in a motorcycle accident. But that hasn’t stopped him from competing athletically. On October 26, Frank and nearly 100 other disabled bicyclists will begin the Qualcomm Million Dollar Challenge to raise money for the construction of a Challenged Athletes Foundation headquarters facility as well as additional handcycles, racing chairs, sports chairs, and sports prosthetics for challenged athletes. "This is extremely important," says Frank, "because most insurance companies don’t cover the types of equipment and prosthetics needed for athletes. We have to pay out of pocket." Participants will ride 60 to 115 miles per day for six days straight, from San Francisco to San Diego. Like other riders, Frank will be collecting donations to help support the Challenge’s cause. "When you go to these races and you see people who are disabled suddenly have the ability to compete, you see the comfort they get from being able to rise up from where they were before their injuries. It gives them confidence in every area of life." (http://mdc2007.kintera.org/warrenfrank)

Straighten Up
Oftentimes women don’t style their hair everyday due to the damage it causes. Enter Barbar’s 1600 Ionic-Titanium Plate Flat Iron, which not only straightens hair, but also actually seals in moisture to create polished and smooth locks. Dominic Barbar, founder of Barbar, affirms, "I designed this tool for the person who straightens her hair on a regular basis and wants to recreate the bone-straight styling she receives at a salon." Tiny ionic ventilation holes surround the titanium flattening plate to break down water molecules to restore moisture and seal the hair cuticle. It can even be used on wet or dry hair. The 1600 Ionic-Titanium Plate Flat Iron is available at professional beauty supply stores nationwide for $130. (888/227-1414, www.barbarartist.com) — Jane Shiomi
