Fourth Annual Harvest For Hope
With September being childhood cancer awareness month, September 16 marks the date for The Emilio Nares Foundation’s (ENF) 4th annual Harvest for Hope fundraiser. The event will take place from 1-4pm at the Cappetta residence, a private estate in the heart of the Rancho Santa Fe Covenant. More than 500 guests will have the opportunity to tour the grounds and enjoy a wide variety of wines and cuisine prepared by the elite chefs of more than 20 of San Diego’s best restaurants including Addison, Acqua al 2, Delicias, Stingaree, Market, and Pamplemousse Grille, to name a few. Founded by San Diego residents Diane and Richard Nares, ENF is a local nonprofit that provides medical information, support groups, respite care, and transportation to families whose children have cancer. These heartfelt efforts honor their only child, Emilio, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at age three and lost his courageous battle shortly before his sixth birthday. Funds raised will support ENF programs. Tickets are $125 per person or $1,000 for ten tickets. (877/507-7788, www.emilionaresfoundation.org) — Mia Stefanko, photo by Vincent Knakal

Honoring The Eckes
North County-based domestic violence and full-service social service agency, Community Resource Center (CRC), will hold its annual fundraising gala Putting on the Ritz on September 29 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds Sports Club. Every year the organization honors a member of the community whose contributions alleviate family violence and reduce homelessness in San Diego. This year, CRC has chosen Paul Ecke, III and the Ecke family for their dedication to local children and their families. Guests will enjoy dinner, auctions, live entertainment, and more. Some 350 guests are expected to attend the charitable event, which organizers hope will raise $200,000 for programs that shelter abused women and children, assist low-income families, and help the homeless transition off the streets. A sell-out crowd of approximately 1,000 members and their guests recently enjoyed the Santaluz Club’s 2007 Summer Music Festival on the practice facility of the Rees Jones-designed championship golf course with a performance by Huey Lewis & The News. The club’s signature event featured an array of international culinary delights at a pre-concert reception complete with live entertainment from the Keith Jacobson Trio. Samuel Scott Opens House
The Samuel Scott Financial Group recently held an open house to celebrate their spacious new offices. President Todd Pianin and executive vice president Brian Reynolds were on hand, along with the partners of Samuel Scott, Mark Robertson and Alex Scoma, to greet the numerous clients, friends, and well-wishers who were in attendance. Guests were greeted with valet parking, and upon entering the offices, were offered martinis poured through an impressive ice luge. Other libations were also plentiful, as were sumptuous tray-passed hors d’oeuvres catered by Wild Thyme. Besides the usual business talk, conversations at the event included compliments on this company’s community involvement with four loan officers and a staff of seven all active in local affairs. Up next — Pianin and Robertson are again sponsors in the Rancho Santa Fe 15th Annual Golf Classic on October 22.

Breast Cancer Nights
At SK Sanctuary
SK Institute, the nonprofit arm of Stephen Krant, MD’s SK Sanctuary in La Jolla, has held monthly Breast Cancer Spa Nights since 2001. At one such recent event, 30 women — some now in the breast cancer treatment process, others 20-year survivors — enjoyed refreshments, complimentary spa services, camaraderie, and talks by two distinguished speakers. Doris Howell, MD (beloved San Diego physician whose credits include founding San Diego Hospice & Palliative Care) spoke of how hope is perhaps the most important thing anyone can have during any illness, and said one of the greatest things that women do is carry hope with them on behalf of themselves and their families. Charles von Gunten, MD, PhD (who heads palliative care at San Diego Hospice) said that relieving suffering and improving the quality of life is an important aspect of human medicine, and San Diego Hospice has become a center for training so these ideals can become a part of everyone’s healthcare experience, wherever they are in the healthcare system. Noche De Sueños
On September 8, St. Paul’s Senior Homes & Services will hold its annual fundraising gala in the Randle Ballroom of the Manchester Grand Hyatt downtown. This year’s honoree is Diane Powers, creator of the Bazaar del Mundo. To honor Powers, the event’s theme is Noche de SueƱos, meaning night of dreams. "We wanted a theme that taps into the beauty and color of the Mexican culture, while also highlighting our dream of helping St. Paul’s bring a PACE [Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly] community to San Diego to serve the frail elderly," says Gayle Stephenson, who is co-chairing the gala with Diane Dawson. PACE serves low-income, frail seniors in need of nursing home care, allowing them to remain living in their home, close to family or a community of friends. Attire is black-tie optional or fiesta-themed. (619/239-6900,

Tale Of Two Openings
La Jolla Playhouse enthusiasts were doubly treated recently when there were two opening nights, within eight days, for unusually distinctive productions. First was The Deception, the latest creation from the Tony Award-winning ensemble Theatre de la Jeune, which was physically inventive, from the actors’ movements to the marvelous set and costumes. The second production was Steppenwolf Theatre’s After the Quake, based upon Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami’s short stories. It offered a stylized, eerie, and thought-provoking staging that addressed the precarious times in which we live. Among the many playgoers spotted in the crowds were Judith Harris and Robert Singer, Faiya Fredman, Geri Ann Warnke and Joseph Kennedy, Barbara ZoBell, and Rita Bronowski.
