Jewel Ball 2007 — ArtRageous
If one didn’t know that Jewel Ball chair Kathryn Stephens was an artist, one look at her event, themed ArtRageous, would have made it obvious. Paintings and sculptures were everywhere, including originals, copies, and many clever fakes. On one wall were massed large square pictures of attractive women’s faces that on closer examination proved to be of Las Patronas members, painted in Andy Warhol’s style. Onstage, artist Dan Dunn created huge paintings of Ray Charles, the Statue of Liberty, and the Mona Lisa, each in under six minutes.

The Country Friends Day at the Races

President Jean Newman welcomed all to the Il Palio room of the Thoroughbred Club, Kimberly Hunt emceed, and co-chairs were Judy Burer and Jan Butcher. Beneficiary of the event was the Home of Guiding Hands, which helps caregivers of children with developmental disabilities.

  Opening Day At The Races
Opening Day at the Del Mar Racetrack saw the one of the biggest turnouts ever — 42,000 people milled about the Grandstand, the Infield, the Clubhouse, the Turf Club bar, and suites. Altogether, betters placed $4,677,000 in wagers on the ponies. The new Polytrack surface drew some attention — it’s easier on the horses and requires far less maintenance. With the hat contest, some spectacular millinery was on parade, along with elegant (and not so elegant) outfits.
