Signs Of Spring

Published

Spring in San Diego brings with it subtle signs — monarch butterflies, hummingbirds, whooping cranes, and other animals migrate; plants bloom; and temperatures and sunlight experience their seasonal shifts. The Children’s School (TCS) in La Jolla is allowing its students to explore these changes by tracking signs and gathering data for Journey North, a Web-based annual global study of wildlife migration and seasonal change that enables more than 18,000 schools to watch the wave of spring unfold. TCS’ students planted tulip bulbs that they will track, submitting data along the way that details the growth of the bulbs from planting to sprouting to flowering. Olivia Alford, science teacher at TCS, notes, “The Journey North program is a favorite at TCS. Students not only get hands-on experience, but also share their knowledge with others around the world. It is a great integration of technology and hands-on science.” (www.learner.org/jnorth)   JANE SHIOMI
