Going For Gold

With much of the globe looking in anticipation toward the opening of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro on August 5, not everyone may be familiar with a local piece of Olympic history right here in San Diego. In preparation for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, participants in the Equestrian Endurance event deemed the climate and air quality of the San Gabriel Valley (home of the Santa Anita racetrack, where the events were scheduled to be held) unsuitable for the event, prompting a search by the International Equestrian Federation for a new venue. After a thorough evaluation, including a tour by IEF president, Britain’s Prince Philip (who was provided transportation to the site from President Reagan via his Marine One helicopter), the still-under-development Fairbanks Ranch Country Club was selected to host. In honor of this privilege, a bronze statue was commissioned and placed at the entrance to the Club. Named “Victory’s Gate,” the statue proudly remains as a beautiful reminder of when the world turned its attention to the little hamlet of Fairbanks Ranch one sunny August day, 32 years ago.   Deanna Murphy
