Phil began investing in estate jewelry when he was just a teenager, and 30 years ago, he set out on his own, opening his own showroom in downtown Carlsbad on State Street and expanding to The Forum two years ago. Phil says jewelry trends are influenced by art and architecture, and Italian designers such as Marco Bicego and Roberto Coin are especially popular now. “We focus more on cutting-edge designers when it comes to everyday, casual wear,” he says. “Customers want jewelry to wear and not to put in a safe. But we cater to everyone. People can spend a couple hundred or a couple hundred thousand [dollars].” The showrooms also carry such on-trend brands as Meira T, slices of diamonds and edgy gems with a huge celebrity following; John Hardy silver pieces handmade in Bali; fashion-forward jewelry by Malibu’s Jude Francis; “little pieces of art” from the fun, youthful line Zoe Chicco; and Mulloys’ signature handcrafted collection.
