Irving Penn: Beyond Beauty

Through February 17, 2019 | Museum of Photographic Arts

Lovers of fashion and art must add this item to their calendars: a visit to the Museum of Photographic Arts exhibit, Irving Penn: Beyond Beauty. Though Penn’s body of work includes drawings and paintings, he is widely known for his fashion and commercial photography. His early career as art director at Saks Fifth Avenue provided background in fashion before he joined Vogue magazine in 1943, where he continued to contribute throughout his career, and his global travels greatly influenced his perspective. Penn even met his future wife on assignment in Paris, and she became a frequent subject in his photographs. Organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and curated by MOPA Curator of Photography Merry Foresta, the collection spans Penn’s career from the late 1930s to the early 2000s. mopa.org
